American Staffordshire Terrier

Breed Profile

American Staffordshire Terriers are massive, powerful, and large-framed dogs, yet loving and affectionate with its human family. They are intelligent and eager to please, which makes them highly trainable, although the downside is that they thrive on mental stimulation, or else they’ll avail themselves of their strong jaws and chew anything in their surrounding.

Temperament

Typically docile and playful with its family, the American Staffordshire terrier is also generally friendly toward strangers as long as its owners are present. It is generally very good with children. It is a protective breed and can at times be aggressive toward other dogs, when feeling challenged. It is stubborn, tenacious and fearless. Despite its  tough persona, the most important thing in life to this breed is its owner’s undivided attention.

Color & Coat

Coat: The short, smooth, close and glossy coat of the American Staffordshire Terrier is fairly easy to groom.

Color: The American Staffordshire Terriers can come in a variety of colors, including blue, fawn, white, black, and red. They can include a mixture of white and other colors or a mixture of white and brindle. It is considered a flaw by the AKC if more than 80 percent of the coat is white.

Living Environment

Staffordshire Terriers will fare well in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised on a daily basis. Without it, the American Staffordshire Terrier will become hard to handle. They need to be taken on long daily walks/jogs or runs. They are very active indoors and will do alright without a yard. This breed prefers warm climates.

Health

The American Staffordshire Terrier is generally a healthy breed, though they are predisposed to a few health problems that you should be on the lookout for. The breed is prone to skin allergies, urinary tract infections, and autoimmune diseases. They may also develop osteoarthritis or spondylosis later in life.
