Breed Profile
The Black Russian Terrier came to life in the former USSR in Red Star (Krasnaya Zvezda) where they were used as military/working dogs. The breeding stock was mostly imported from countries where the Red Army was active during the Second World War, notably Eastern Germany. BRT were bred chiefly for their working ability, rather than their majestic appearance.
Temperament
The Black Russian Terrier is a calm, courageous dog which oozes self assurance. He has a high IQ and is eager to be trained. The Black Russian Terrier was initially bred to guard and protect. He is alert, responsive, determined and possesses a protective nature Also, he is known to be fearless, deeply loyal to family, and not receptive to any type of intrusion by strangers into his territory.
Color & Coat
Coat: He possesses a double coat with a coarse outer guard hair over a softer undercoat. The coat is hard and dense, never soft, woolly, silky or frizzy. Whilst his weatherproof outer coat is water repellant, his undercoat insulates the breed from the Russian cold weather.
Color: The Black Russian Terriers are known to have black coats, with an occasional sprinkling of gray hair, even in puppies.
Health
The Black Russian Terrier are known to be generally healthy and lead long lives. However it is prone to certain hereditary diseases. Major concerns include: Hip dysplasia, Elbow dysplasia, Hyperuricosuria, Juvenile laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathy.
