Border Terrier

Breed Profile

The Border Terrier hails from northeast England, close to the border with Scotland, during the 18th century. He’s the product of a unrelentless battle between farmers and foxes. Borders were built to have a long, narrow and flexible bodies to pass through narrow holes and flush foxes out of their hideouts, long legs to keep up with the horses during a foxhunt.

Temperament

Whilst, obstinate and determined, border terriers are known to be sound dogs. They are friendly and rarely display aggression. They are very good with children, but may go after  cats and other small pets. Borders excel in task-oriented activities and have a uncanny ability to jump high and run fast granted their impressive long legs. Whilst, the breed excels in agility training, they are more adept at learning  jumps and seesaws than weaving poles. They are receptive for training and soon can in no time learn a couple of tricks.

Color & Coat

Coat: The Border Terrier exhibits a short, dense undercoat covered with a wiry topcoat. His skin is thick and sagging that occasionally come in handy when fox-hunting, as it protects him from bites.

Color: The Border Terrier coat can be red, blue and tan, grizzle and tan, or wheaten (pale yellow or fawn). Some have a small patch of white on the chest.

Living Environment

Borders are described as “hard as nails” when working, but at home they’re even tempered, affectionate, and trainable. Borders love exploring outdoors and make fine playmates for kids. Although Borders are bred to be country dogs, they can easily adapt to city life—as long as they get a huge amount of exercise. Borders tend to be friendly with other dogs, but their hunting instincts can be readily awoken when cats or squirrels cross their path.

Health

Borders are known to be a hardy breed, though they are confronted with certain non negligeable genetic health problems, including Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome (CECS), also known as “Spike’s Disease.” This is a recently recognized canine health problem and hereditary canine disease in Border Terriers, which can get confused with canine epilepsy. It is considered to be a metabolic, neurological or muscle disorder.
