Breed Profile

The Bouvier des Flandres is a herding dog breed hailing from Flanders, Belgium. They were originally used for general farm work including cattle droving, sheep herding, and cart pulling, and nowadays make excellent guard dogs and police dogs, as well as excellent pets.

Temperament

The bouvier is a steady, loyal companion that is devoted, fearless and protective. If given its daily dose of exercise, it remains calm and well-mannered indoors, however would jump at the possibility of an adventure in the great outdoors. It is fiercely independent and confident of its own judgment, yet eager to please.  Also, it can be domineering. Whilst, it is known to be reserved and even protective toward strangers, it can be aggressive with strange dogs. It enjoys the company of children, although it may nip at their heels when playing.

Color & Coat

Coat: The Bouvier possesses a double coat with a rather rough looking outer coat which requires regular grooming.

Color: The colors of the Bouvier may be be fawn, black, grey brindle, or “pepper and salt”.

Living Environment

The Bouvier des Flandres will fare well in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. As it is relatively inactive indoors, it would do well with at least a large yard.

Health

The breed is prone to hip dysplasia, eye problems such as cataracts. The Bouvier has a very high pain threshold, making it difficult for veterinarians to tell where the dog is hurting. Also the breed tends to pass gas on regular basis.
