Breed Profile

The Groenendael (known as the Belgian Shepherd Dog) is the solid-colored variety of the four Belgian shepherd dogs. Elegant and graceful, he possesses a long black coat and an imposing appearance. Given his athletic, majestic allure, and hardworking disposition, makes him an excellent candidate for agility, herding, and obedience competitions.

Temperament

Groenendaels are described as highly intelligent, alert, in tune with their surroundings and known to forge very strong relationships. They are said to be loyal, intelligent, fun, highly trainable and particularly well suited to family life. As puppies, it is vital that they receive plenty of socializing and will benefit from regular activity and close interaction with people throughout their lives. Their herding heritage gives them a comparatively high energy level, and mental as well as physical exercise is necessary to satisfy the Belgian Shepherd.

Color & Coat

Coat: The Groenendael have double-layer coat, consisting of a dense undercoat and a harder outer coat.

Color: According to the breed standards the Groenendael is completely black or black with a bit of white between the pads of the feet.

Living Environment

The Groenendael will fare well in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. It is moderately active indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard. The Groenendael can sleep outdoors, although he prefers to be with his folks.

Health

This hardy, healthy breed is not known to have any major health concerns. Some minor concerns that have been seen are epilepsy, skin allergies, eye problems, excessive shyness, excessive aggressiveness and occasionally hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Do not overfeed this breed,  as you may nourish its penchant for being lazy and obese.
