Labrador Retriever
Breed Profile
The Labrador Retriever, or just Labrador, is a type of retriever-gun dog. The Labrador is one of the most popular breeds of dog in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. The Labrador retriever hails from the island of Newfoundland in Canada. Once upon a time, it was called the St. John’s Dog and considered the Fisherman’s Dog. This dog worked in icy waters retrieving loose nets.
Temperament
The AKC describes the Labrador’s temperament as a kind, pleasant, outgoing and tractable nature. Labradors’ sense of smell allows them to home in on almost any scent and follow the path of its origin. Labradors have earned the reputation of being peaceful and excellent family dog, also with the youngest members of the tribe and other animals.
Color & Coat
Coat: The Labrador Retriever has the short, dense, double, water-resistant coat that protects the dog when retrieving from water. The short, “otter” tail is another distinctive feature of this breed.
Color: Black, chocolate, or yellow (ranges from pale yellow (nearly white) to fox red)
Health
It is a healthy breed with relatively few health issues. Health issues include inherited disorders and obesity. Labradors are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, knee problems.
