Landseer

Breed Profile

The Landseer was called after the British painter Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, or precisely after his painting A Distinguished Member of the Humane Society in 1838, which depicts a Landseer dog. Due to their excellent swimming skills, these dogs were utilized by fishermen to tow nets to the shore. It is believed that, most of its exportation of these dogs occurred during the late 18th century.

Temperament

The Landseer Newfoundland dog is known for its kind disposition, gentleness, and serenity. They enjoy swimming and tend to drool, though not as much as some other giant breeds. Whilst the Landseer European Continental Type is also sweet, affectionate and enjoys swimming, it differs from the Landseer Newfoundland in its ability to respond with agility and speed.

Color & Coat

Coat: Thick, coarse, double coat

Color: White with black patches, white around the nose, white tail with little black

Living Environment

The Landseer needs it daily fix of exercise. At home, they tend to be relatively inactive indoors and will do with a small yard is sufficient. They do not like hot temperatures. This playful, energetic and friendly breed is suitable for kids.

Health

There are some breed-associated health problems that can occur, including, Elbow Dysplasia, Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (Bloat), Cystine Uroliths, Ear Infections.
