Maltese

Breed Profile

The Maltese is a small, hardy, white silky haired dog belonging to the toy group and poodle. The breed name and origins are from the Mediterranean island nation of Malta. It is of spaniel origin, descending from the same stock that produced the Portuguese Water Dog, the Barbet and the Poodle.

Temperament

Maltese are bred to be companion dogs. They are known to be very energetic and playful, and even as a Maltese ages, they continue to brim with energy.
Maltese are known to have sudden outbursts of energy leading to them running around with incredible agility. They’re quick to learn a new trick or two and enjoy a game of catch.

Color & Coat

Coat: The coat is single, that is, without undercoat. It hangs long, flat, and silky over the sides of the body almost to the ground. The long head-hair may be tied up in a topknot or it may be left dangling.

Living Environment

The Maltese fares well within an apartment. They are very active indoors and will be fine without a yard. This is a suitable breed for kids, some Maltese may occasionally be irritable with smaller children and it is therefore recommended that they be supervised when playing, although socializing them at a young age will reduce this habit.

Health

Whilst the Maltesers are generally considered to be a healthy dog breed, some of them can have health issues like: Glaucoma, and progressive Retinal Atrophy. Corneal ulcers can develop if eyes get scratched. Chronic allergies are quite prevalent and cause terribly itchy skin that can result in bacterial infections (hot spots).
