Breed Profile

In ancient times, Pugs were bred to be companions for ruling families in China. The pet Pugs were highly valued by Chinese Emperors, and the royal dogs were kept in luxury and guarded by soldiers. They have been popular throughout Europe since at least the 16th Century. After becoming a favourite of the Royalty, the breed rose to stardom.

Temperament

The Pug has an outstanding and charming personality, despite its small size. Pugs are known to be determined but rarely exhibit signs of aggression. Pugs can be bossy or stubborn and children should therefore be taught how to get on with their family pug.

Color & Coat

Coat: Its coat is fine, smooth and short.

Color: The colors are fawn or black.

Living Environment

Pugs fare well provided it gets its daily dose of exercise and activities. Pug owners should be aware that their dog can be sensitive to both heat and cold. In addition, because of the shape of the face, the breathing and cooling system of Pugs can pose a problem. This playful, energetic and affectionate breed is suitable for kids.

Health

As Pugs do not have longer snouts and prominent skeletal brow ridges, they are at risk for eye injuries such as proptosis, scratched corneas, and painful entropion. They also have compact breathing passageways, resulting in many suffering from breathing difficulties or unable to efficiently regulate their temperature through evaporation from the tongue by panting.
