Pumi

Breed Profile

The Pumi is a medium-small breed of sheep dog from Hungary. The Pumi is considered to have arisen from the cross-breeding of Hungarian Puli with French and German herding dogs from the 17th century onwards.

Temperament

The Pumi is energetic, expressive, determined and whilst it remains a little suspicious of strangers,it never becomes aggressive. It is rather somewhat vocal and always prepared for action. They can be very protective of their folks. Early socialisation is of paramount importance.

Color & Coat

Coat: The thick coat is curly and of medium length and consists of a harsh topcoat and soft undercoat. This texture enables the dog to tolerate extremes of weather.

Color: Pumis can exhibit different shades of grey, white, or fawn. Grey Pumis are the most common, born black, and ranging from almost black to light grey in adulthood. Puppies usually start greying at six to eight weeks old and the shade progressively lightens.

Living Environment

The Pumi does not fare well within an apartment. This is not a town dog and will be happiest where it has tasks to do for its folks. Pumis are good with children and other animals, as long as they receive training from an early age. This breed requires a heavy dose of daily exercise.

Health

Pumis are a healthy breed and enjoy a life expectancy ranging from 12 to 15 years, but Pumis have been known to live up to 19 years.  The Pumis suffer from patella luxation and canine hip dysplasia.
