Breed Profile

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was created in the region of Staffordshire, England, in the nineteenth century from crosses between Bulldogs and various local terriers akin to the Manchester Terrier. The Staffordshire Bull was created for the then-popular sport of bull baiting. The early bull and terrier dogs were created as a result of breeding for a characteristic known as gameness. Landrace working dogs crossbred with the early bull and terrier types with this gameness trait, which in turn provided the ancestral foundation stock for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Temperament

The temperament of this modern breed makes it  suitable as a companion dog but due to its breeding and history. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is known for its determination and robustness.  However, despite this demeanour, this breed is also known to be affectionate, friendly, and faithful.

Color & Coat

Coat: The breed dons a smooth, short and closed coat.

Color: Staffordshires come in a spectrum of hues: fawn, red, blue, black, and white.

Living Environment

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier will fare Ok in an apartment if given its daily fix of exercise. It is quite hyper indoors and will thrive if it has a small yard at its disposal. This playful, energetic and friendly breed is suitable for children. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier possesses a huge amount of stamina and must be given an opportunity to vent its energy during a daily stroll or jog.

Health

This breed can suffer from Hip dysplasia and it prone to mast cell tumors and an elongated soft palate. Like all the bully type breeds, Staffordshire Bull Terriers suffer from gas problems.
