Akita Inu

Breed Profile

The Akita is a large breed of dog originating from the mountainous regions of northern Japan. The Akita is a powerful, independent and dominant breed, commonly aloof with strangers but affectionate with family members. As a breed, Akitas are generally hardy, but they have been known to be susceptible to various genetic conditions and can be sensitive to certain drugs. Akitas have the physical appearance of a cold climate dog. They’re the largest of the spitz-type dogs.

Living Environment

The Akita Inu will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. It is moderately active indoors and will do best with a large yard. Highly intelligent, good with children and other animals within the home. As with any other breed of dog correct socialization is essential.

Health

Akitas are prone to hypothyroidism. Hip dysplasia is an inherited condition in which the thigh bone doesn’t fit snugly into the hip joint. Gastric dilatation-volvulus, commonly called bloat, is a life-threatening condition that affects large, deep-chested dogs like Akitas. Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) is a family of eye diseases that involves the gradual deterioration of the retina. Sebaceous adenitis (SA) is a serious problem in Akitas. This genetic condition is difficult to diagnose and often mistaken for hypothyroidism, allergies, or other conditions.
