Beagle

Breed Profile

The Beagle Hound dog is small, compact, short-legged, short eared, droopy eared, courageous, loving, easy-going, and friendly. Because of their friendly disposition, easy handling, and trusting nature (towards humans) they are commonly used in dog vivisections.

Temperament

Beagles are gentle, sweet, and entertaining. They will make you laugh,  but that’s when their naughty behaviour does not get the best of you. Beagle owners spend a lot of time trying to outthink their dogs, and they often must resort to tricks like food rewards to lure the Beagle into temporary obedience.

Color & Coat

Coat: Beagles have a smooth, dense double coat that is resistant to rain

Color: Lemon & White, Brown & White, Tri-color, Black & White, Red & White, Black & Brown. The breed standard for Beagles says “any hound color” is acceptable.

Living Environment

If properly trained Beagles can live in apartments, but should receive adequate exercise. Bear in mind, as they like to pick up scents, owners should keep them on a leash when outdoors. Beagles that are properly socialized will ‘beam’ and wag their tail at those they know and even strangers, therefore they make ideal companions for children. Beagles can get bored if left alone in a house too long. If left in a backyard, Beagles will start finding ways to entertain themselves, usually by howling, digging, or trying to escape, which can drive the owner bonkers.

Health

Some health issues include hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism, among others. Some Beagles may be faced with these health challenges in their lives, but the majority of them are healthy dogs.
