Bearded Collie

Breed Profile

The Bearded Collie , or Beardie, is a herding breed of dog once used primarily by Scottish shepherds. They serve today as excellent family companions, show dogs, working sheepdogs, or even all three. Because of their energy, agility and quickness they truly excel at dog sports.

Temperament

A Beardie is smart, resourceful, and confident. His bouncy, bubbly personality makes him fun to be with, but when it comes to training he can be an independent thinker with a mind of his own. He’s a boisterous playmate which makes him endearing to children and has a sense of humor that makes him a joy to be around. He’s alert, lively, self-confident and active.

Color & Coat

Coat: Double with soft, furry and close undercoat. Outer coat flat, harsh, strong and shaggy, free from woolliness and curl, though slight wave permissible. The bearded collie’s hair should be brushed daily.

Color: Slate grey, reddish-fawn, black, blue, all shades of grey, brown and sandy with or without white markings. Never merle/dapple.

Living Environment

They thrive within a family environment. Please bear in mind that Bearded Collies must be walked daily or have some kind of venue for exercise, otherwise they’ll become quite restless. They are also known to be loud barkers.

Health

They are prone to hip dysplasia and beware that their dense coat may conceal external parasite infestation.
