Belgian Malinois

Breed Profile

The Belgian Malinois is a medium-to-large breed of dog, sometimes considered as a variety of the Belgian Shepherd dog rather than as a separate breed. The name “Malinois” is derived from Malines, the French name for the breed’s Flemish city of origin, Mechelen. The breed is used as a working dog for tasks including detection of odors such as explosives, accelerants (for arson investigation), and narcotics, tracking humans for suspect apprehension in police work, and search and rescue missions. The U.S. Secret Service uses Belgian Malinois to ensure the protection of the White House. Also they are used by the Oketz, the K-9 unit of the Israel Defense Forces.

Temperament

This is an outstanding working dog who is confident and protective in any situation. He’s affectionate with family members but reserved toward strangers until he becomes accustomed to their presence. The watchdog abilities of the Malinois are outstanding. He excels at protecting his tribe and property. Shyness and aggression are not part of this breed’s vocabulary

Color & Coat

Coat:Its coat is fairly short, straight, and hard, with a dense undercoat.

Color: Malinois are fawn-colored, red, or brown, and the tips of their hair are black, while the GSD is usually tan with a black saddle.

Living Environment

The Belgian Malinois will fare well in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. It is moderately active indoors and will thrive if given the opportunity to exercise in an an average-sized yard. This breed prefers cool climates, but adapts well to others. It can live outdoors but would much rather be with his folks. This breed can make excellent companions for kids. It is also friendly toward other pets and it has great watchdog ability.
