Bloodhound

Breed Profile

The Bloodhound is a big scent hound, which was originally bred for hunting deer, wild boar in the Middle Ages. The Bloodhound is believed to have hailed from hounds once reared at the Abbey of Saint-Hubert, Belgium. This breed is famous for its ability to smell humans from great distances, even days later. Its extraordinarily sharp sense of smell, coupled with a strong and determined tracking instinct, make it an ideal scent hound, This breed is used by police all over the globe to track down escaped prisoners, missing people, lost children, and lost pets.

Temperament

This breed is gentle, and becomes unrelentless when pursuing a scent. Because of its strong tracking instinct, it can have a mind of its own and it may become challenging to obedience train and handle on a leash. Bloodhounds have an affectionate and even-tempered disposition with humans, making excellent family pets. However, like any pet, they also need supervision when around small children.

Color & Coat

Coat: The Bloodhound’s coat hangs, which feels thin to the touch. Around the neck and head, it hangs in deep folds. As the head hangs down, the skin falls into loose, sagging folds, especially over the forehead and the temples.

Color: The colours are usually listed as black and tan, liver and tan, and red. White is not uncommon on the chest, and sometimes appears on the feet.

Living Environment

The Bloodhound will fare well in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. They are relatively inactive indoors and do best with at least an average-sized yard.

Health

Compared to other purebred dogs, Bloodhounds suffer from an very high rate of gastrointestinal ailments, with gastric dilatation volvulus (bloat) being the most common type of gastrointestinal problem. The breed also suffers from an unusually high incidence of eye, skin, and ear ailments, thus the reason why frequent inspections of these areas are necessary to detect signs of developing problems. Owners should be knowledgeable of the signs of bloat, as it is both the most common illness and the leading cause of death of Bloodhounds.
