Boxer
Breed Profile
The origin of Boxers can be traced to 19th century Germany. They’re the product of a cross between German mastiffs and bulldogs. They were initially used for dog fighting and bull baiting, however more recently, Boxers have become popular with the military, police, and guard duties.
Temperament
The Boxer is known from ancient times for his extreme faithfulness to his master and household. In contrast to this extreme faithfulness with people of his surrounding, he can be distrustful of strangers. Bright and friendly characterizes his temperament when playing, and braveness and determination, when aroused.
Color & Coat
Coat: The Boxer is a short-haired breed, with a shiny, smooth coat that lies tight to the body.
Color: The recognized colors are fawn and brindle, frequently with a white underbelly and white on the feet.
Health
Boxers have several health issues to which are they are prone, including cancers, heart conditions such as aortic stenosis and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (the so-called “Boxer cardiomyopathy”), hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, and degenerative myelopathy and epilepsy, other conditions that may be seen are bloat, intestinal problems, and allergies (although these may be more related to diet than breed). Entropion, a malformation of the eyelid requiring surgical correction, has been seen at times. Moreover, some lines have a predisposition for spondylosis deformans, a fusing of the spine, or dystocia.
