The Briard is an ancient breed of large herding dog, hailing from France. During the First World War, the Briard became indispensable for the French army as a sentry, messenger, and to search for wounded soldiers. Nowadays, the Briard’s role include police, military and search-and-rescue work. They also make excellent companion dogs.
Temperament
Whilst the Briard is very protective with his folks, they are known to be aloof with strangers. They have proven to be a very good breed to have around children of all ages. Indeed, these dogs rapidly cultivate the affections of their owners. They are very emotional, capable of crying for hours after their owners’ departure and are known to become elated when they return.
Color & Coat
Coat: Its undercoat is fine and firm, and its outer coat feels coarse and dry, lying flat in long, slightly wavy locks. On the shoulders, the coat’s length is six inches or more.
Color: The Briard appear in different hues, ranging from tawny, black, grey or blue however there are variations in each color.
Health
Overall the Briard is considered to be a healthy breed. Responsible breeders screen their stock for health conditions such as cancer, hip dysplasia, congenital stationary night blindness, cataracts, corneal dystrophy, retinal folds, hypothyroidism, immune diseases, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, and kidney disease.
