Spaniel type dogs have made an appearance in art and literature for almost 500 years. Initially, spaniels in England were divided among land spaniels and water spaniels. The differentiation among the Spaniels, which resulted in the breeds that we see today did not start until the mid-19th century and gradually it became distinct and types were distinguished according to weight.

Coat: The coat is of medium length, silky in texture and either flat or slightly wavy. The feathering should not be so prolific that it becomes an impediment in the field, but it should be long enough to protect the underside of the dog.

Color: Solid English Cocker colours may appear in black, liver/brown, red/golden with black or brown pigmentation.

Living Environment

The English Cocker Spaniel will fare well within an apartment provided it gets its daily fix of exercise. They will thrive if given at least an average-sized yard. They are affectionate, playful, and have a generally friendly disposition, even towards strangers. With its playful, energetic and affectionate disposition, this breed can make good mates for children.

Common health issues with English Cockers are bite problems, skin allergies, shyness, cataracts, deafness, aggression towards other dogs, and benign tumours. Some rare health issues may include canine hip dysplasia, patellar lunation, canine dilated cardiomyopathy, and heart murmurs.
