German Wirehaired Pointer

Breed Profile

The German Wirehaired Pointer is a medium to large-sized griffon type breed of dog that was given life in the 19th century in Germany for the purpose of hunting. In the late 20th century, it became a leading gun dog in Germany. This breed emerged as the result of the careful mixing and crossing of the griffon, German Shorthaired Pointer, Deutscher Stichelhaar, Deutscher Kurzhaar, and the hunting Pudelpointer in the late 19th century.

Temperament

The German Wirehaired Pointer is friendly, lively, strong-willed, active and smart.  Keen to learn and loyal to its family, it needs a trainer who is consistent. They like to be busy and enjoy working for their owners. They are friendly with their folks, but may be standoffish with strangers, so early socialization is a must.

Color & Coat

Coat: The coat of the German Wirehaired Pointer is weather-resistant and it is to a large extent water-repellent. It is straight, harsh, wiry, and quite flat-lying.

Color: The Colors are: Liver (brown) and white or black and white ticked usually with some solid patches, and solid liver (brown) with or without a white chest patch.

Living Environment

The German Wirehaired Pointer does not thrive within an apartment. Within a confined space, it can become easily upset and overactive. Therefore it needs a huge amount of exercise to prevent extreme indoor restlessness and therefore it will need at least a large yard. They may or may not get along with cats and other small pets. Puppies that are raised with cats are more likely to welcome them as part of the family. In isolation, this dog breed may not be the best companion for kids. However, to reduce risks, it is important to have the puppy grow alongside with kids so that it will associate children with fun moments.

Health

The German Wirehair is generally a healthy breed, but like all breeds of dogs, they’re prone to certain diseases and conditions. These include, Willebrand’s Disease type 2, hip dysplasia, heart disease.
