Breed Profile

The Irish Setter is a working gun dog that was given life in Ireland, probably through a combination of spaniels, other setters, pointers and the Irish Terrier. The Irish setter is a magnificent, majestic looking dog. Some say it is the most attractive breed in the world.

Temperament

The Irish Setter is fun-loving, playful, and caring. Irish Setters are cordial and just love people. They aren’t cut out to be guard dogs, although they’ve been known to jump in and protect their folks when necessary. They are, nevertheless, outstanding  watchdogs and will bark to inform you that there are visitors or intruders.

Color & Coat

Coat: The coat is moderately long and silky.

Color: They come in red or chestnut color.

Living Environment

The Irish Setter is not suitable for apartment life unless the owners can keep up with their drive to exercise. Irish Setters are good with children, other dogs, and will enthusiastically welcome visitors. Although they get on well with household pets, small animals may be enticing for this breed, as they are a hunting breed.

Health

Irish Setters tend to be a relatively healthy breed. Health issues that have been noted in Irish Setters include hip dysplasia, cancer, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), epilepsy, entropion, hypothyroidism, hyper osteodystrophy, gastric dilatation volvulus (bloat), osteosarcoma, Von Willebrand’s disease, patent ductus arteriosus, canine Leukocyte adhesion deficiency (CLAD) and celiac disease.
