Basenji

Breed Profile

The Basenji Congo dog is athletic, energetic, playful, alert, and independent. The Basenji traces its origin in Ancient Egypt 5000 years ago. Today, Africans value Basenjis for their hunting skills, quickness, speed, and their stealth (no barking). Basenjis (hound group) were ‘modified’ in England in the late 1930’s. By the early 1940’s basenji litters were being born in the United States.

Temperament

Basenjis can be standoffish to strangers but are open to forming friendships. Owners should give their Basenji ‘chewy toys’ as this dog loves to chew on things. In addition, this dog thrives on its daily fix of activities. Basenjis must be properly socialized in order to get along with other animals or pets.

Color & Coat

Coat: Basenjis are recognizable by their glistening short coat, and tightly curled tail

Color: Black & White, Black Tan & White, Brindle & White, Red & White

Living Environment

The Basenji will fare well in an apartment if it gets enough exercise. It is very active indoors and a small yard will do. The Basenji is happiest when it is kept with two or three other Basenjis. As a rule of thumb, they will not encounter any problems with other Basenjis.

Health

Basenjis are generally healthy, but like all breeds, they’re prone to certain health conditions. This breed is prone to Fanconi’s syndrome (kidney problems), which must be treated the moment the symptoms are noticed. Also, it is susceptible to progressive retinal atrophy, intestinal and eye problems.
