Bichons are alleged to have originated in the Mediterranean and then have found their way into other parts of the world when taken along on trade routes. During the 16th century this dog gained popularity with the French royal courts. With compact bodies, baby-doll faces, and fluffy white hair, Bichons are an attractive breed and their perky, good-natured disposition make them all the more appealing. People often mistake them for white Poodles.
Temperament
The Bichon Frise breed standard calls for a dog that is “gentle mannered, sensitive, playful and affectionate.” The dogs are generally very sociable and fare well with an owner who enjoys their company during outings. They display a great deal affection to and have a high IQ. Bichons get on well with children because they are playful and brim with energy. If encouraged by owners, they can also become very territorial.
Color & Coat
Coat: The noticeable powder-puff appearance of the bichon hails from its double coat, characterized by both a soft dense undercoat as well as a coarser, curly outer coat.
Color: The most common colour for Bichons is snow white with little shedding.
Health
Bichon Frises are prone to scratching and chewing on themselves which often results in serious skin conditions. They suffer from allergies to fleas, chemicals, pollen, dust, etc. Loose knee joints, ear infections, cataracts, diabetes, and heart disease are also common ailments that the breed is known to suffer from.
