Temperament

Boerboels are an intelligent and energetic breed. They are loyal, make great companions to children, and tend to be protective of their family and territory. They are quite charming, when laziness does not get the better of them and will express no hesitation to defend their loved ones to the death. They are often called “Velcro” dogs, always wanting to hanging around their owners, and so, are not likely to decide on a whim to wander off on their own. The Boerboel also requires training and firm handling from an early age. It is not unusual for this breed to exhibit aggression toward other dogs or strangers.

The Boerboel will be miserable in an apartment. It should, at least, have a large, fenced-in yard to run and play at his disposal. The Boerboel can live outdoors. This breed should not be left to run on its own for it is overly protective and sometimes are not amused by strangers.
