Borzoi

Breed Profile

The Borzoi , also called the Russian Wolfhound is a breed of domestic dog. Hailed from dogs which were brought to Russia from central Asian countries, its shape is akin to that of the greyhound, and is also a member of the sighthound family. Borzois are large Russian sighthounds that look similar to central Asian breeds such as the Afghan hound, Saluki, and the Kyrgyz Taigan. Borzois can be described as “long-haired greyhounds”.

Temperament

The Borzoi is an athletic and independent breed of dog. Most borzois are fairly quiet and only bark on rare occasions. They do not  exhibit strong territorial drives and therefore would gladly welcome any intruder, therefore they do not make good security dogs. The borzoi requires a patient and experienced trainer. They are gentle and highly sensitive dogs with a natural respect for humans. As adults they become real couch potatoes with remarkably gracious house manners. Borzois are not known to display any dominant or aggressive behaviour towards people, but may show signs of aggression if manhandled. Typically, they remain reserved with strangers but affectionate with people they know well.

Color & Coat

Coat: Long, silky coat, may be flat, wavy, or curly. Short, smooth hair hides the head, ears, and front of legs, and a profuse, curly frill decorates the neck. Thick feathering hide the tail and rear end. The hair’s beautiful silky texture is resistant to dirt and mud, so it’s easy to keep clean.

Color: Any color or combination of colors.

Living Environment

The Borzoi fares well in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. They are relatively inactive indoors and are so peaceful that no one would notice if it escaped. However, they require space to walk and run so they will do best with at least an average-sized yard. In the city he should constantly be on the lead, unless it is in a safe, enclosed space.

Health

As the Borzoi is prone to bloat, large meals should be avoided. Instead small meals two or three times a day. should be served. Also exercise after meals should be avoided and high sensitivity to drugs is an issue to consider with this breed.
