Hovawart

Breed Profile

The Hovawart is a medium to large size German dog breed. The name of the breed means “an estate guard dog”, which was how the breed was used in the past. The breed stems from the Black Forest region and was first described in text and paintings in medieval times.

Temperament

The Hovawart makes an excellent  watch dog and is somewhat reserved towards strangers. They make excellent family dogs as they are utterly faithful to their  folks. They are a working dog breed, which need consistent training and meaningful activities throughout their lives.

Color & Coat

Coat: The long-haired, dense coat is slightly wavy, lying flat.

Color: The correct color descriptions are black, black and gold, and blond.

Living Environment

Hovawarts do not do well in apartments. They are moderately active indoors and will thrive with at least an average-sized yard. They prefer cool climates and can sleep outdoors. This playful, energetic, and affectionate breed is good with children.

Health

Hovawarts are quite healthy and enjoy a high life expectancy.  One can expect an average lifespan in the 10 to 14 year range. There are no breed-specific health issues  and hip dysplasia rates have been calculated at less than 5%. For a large breed dog, this is an exceptionally low rate.
