Hungarian Vizsla

Breed Profile

The Vizsla is a dog breed stemming from Hungary. The Hungarian or Magyar Vizsla are sporting dogs and faithful companions, in addition to being the tiniest of the all-round pointer-retriever breeds. The Vizsla’s medium size is one of the breed’s most appealing characteristics as a hunter of fowl and upland game and, through the centuries.

Temperament

Vizslas brim with energy and are well-mannered, faithful, tender and extremely friendly. They quickly forge close ties with their owners, children, and even strangers.  Vizslas will cry or whine when they feel neglected or are feeling sad. Some will bark at strangers if they feel a creeping sense of invasion of privacy. They make excellent guard dogs when trained to be so.

Color & Coat

Coat: The coat should be short, smooth, dense, and close-lying, without a woolly undercoat.

Color: The standard coat is a solid golden-rust color which comes in different hues, but some breeding programs have given rise to solid rust coats. The coat could also be described as a copper-brown color, russet gold, and dark sandy gold.

Living Environment

The Hungarian Vizsla is suitable for apartment life. It is moderately active indoors and thrives with at least an average-sized yard. This playful, energetic, and affectionate breed is good with children. This breed brims with energy and expects to be taken out on daily, long, brisk walks.

Health

The Vizsla is considered to be a robust dog but some localized breeding programs using a small number of dogs have resulted in heritable illnesses in some offspring including: Hip dysplasia is a rare occurrence, like Canine epilepsy, Cancer (mast cell tumors, hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma), Sebaceous adenitis.
