Italian Greyhound

Breed Profile

The Italian Greyhound (in Italian: piccolo levriero italiano) is a small breed of dog of the sighthound type, sometimes referred to as in called the Italian for short, and nicknamed the “IG” or “Iggy”. Italian Greyhounds trace their ancestry to ancient Egypt back to 4000 BC. Later, their images were shown in Mediterranean cave paintings 2000 years ago. These dogs were a hit with Noblemen during the Renaissance. A similar-looking dog was found in the lava destroyed city of Pompeii.

Temperament

The Italian Greyhound is good around people. However, the breed’s slim build and short coat makes them somewhat fragile and are prone to injuries from playing around with kids. They are quick, agile and athletic, and love to run.

Color & Coat

Coat: The coat is short and glossy, like satin.

Color: Coat colours of Black, Blue and Isabelle (Fawn) exist in all nuances

Living Environment

The Italian Greyhound is suitable for apartment life. They thrive indoors and will fare well without a yard. They are sensitive to cold weather and often need that a shirt be put on them. In isolation, this dog breed might not be the best mate for children. However, to reduce the risks, have the puppy grow alongside with kids so that it will associate children with pleasant memories.

Health

This breed has several health issues. These include: Epilepsy, Legg-Perthes disease (degeneration of the hip), Patellar Luxation (slipped stifles), von Willebrand disease (vWD) (Bleeding disorder), Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), Color dilution alopecia (hair loss in dilute pigmented dogs, i.e.: blues, blue fawns, etc.) Leg Breaks (most common under the age of 2)
