Miniature Bull Terrier

Breed Profile

The Miniature Bull Terrier is a breed with origins in the extinct English White Terrier, the Dalmatian and the Bulldog. The first existence is documented 1872 in The Dogs of British Island. The Miniature Bull Terriers have a solid build, with very muscular shoulders and a full body. Like the Bull Terrier, they have a head described as “egg-shaped”. It is flat on top with a Roman nose.

Temperament

Miniature Bull Terriers are known to be obstinate and undeterred. Despite their small stature, they will readily challenge larger dogs. However, as with any dog, owners can reduce the risk of confrontations by providing appropriate training. They brim with energy and love to play with people, but they are not always good-natured when in other dogs’ company.

Color & Coat

Coat: Miniature Bull Terriers have short, fine, and glossy coats that are very close to the skin, like Bull Terriers.

Color: They are accepted in the ring to be white, white with another colour, or fully coloured.

Living Environment

Miniature Bull Terriers can thrive in an apartment provided it gets its daily fix of exercise. They should be exercised on a regular basis to avoid obesity. They can get along with other dogs their size or bigger, but toy dogs and cats are likely to trigger their prey drive. This breed is suitable for kids and it is friendly toward other pets and reserved toward strangers.

Health

Miniature Bull Terriers are prone to many health problems. Deafness occurs in both coloured and white Miniature Bull Terriers. Puppies can be born unilaterally deaf (deaf in one ear) or bilaterally deaf (deaf in both ears). Miniature Bull Terriers are also at risk for having luxating patellas. This is a knee problem common in small dogs. It can be treated by surgery. Miniature Bull Terriers are also susceptible to eye problems such as primary lens luxation.
