Papillon

Breed Profile

The dwarf Spaniel of the 16th century, which appear in many paintings of that era, is the dog that became known as the Papillon. The Papillon also called the Continental Toy Spaniel, is a breed of dog, of the Spaniel type. One of the oldest of the toy Spaniels, it derives its name from its characteristic butterfly-like the look of the long and fringed hair on the ears.

Temperament

The Papillon has a cheerful, friendly and adventurous temperament.  They are not known to be shy or aggressive. Papillons make excellent family dogs, but owners are advised to keep an eye open when they are around little children, who may lack understanding of the Papillon and may do something to upset it.

Color & Coat

Coat: Its abundant coat is long, silky, straight and flowing. Its hallmark characteristic, besides its affectionate disposition and alertness, is its butterfly ears.

Color: Papillons are parti colored or white with patches of any hue.

Living Environment

Although they can be good city dogs, they are sometimes not happy campers in apartments. This is due to the breed’s strong instinct to protect their property, resulting in incessant barking.
Papillons have a high IQ and can easily learn a new trick or two. These dogs can be sociable with children and strangers, but remain quite timid with new people.

Health

Papillons enjoy good health and have only minor health concerns, although patellar luxation, seizures, and dental problems can be issues. Additionally, they can be at risk for progressive retinal atrophy, intervertebral disk disease, and allergies.
