Pekingese

Breed Profile

The Pekingese hails from Peking (Beijing), China. The Pekingese was viewed as a royal, dignified, holy dog, which only royalty could own. Due to their semi-divine status, stealing even one Pekingese was punishable by death. Recent DNA analysis confirms that the Pekingese breed is one of the most ancient breeds of dog.

Temperament

The fragile appearance of the Pekingese is misleading as it is in fact very robust. His confident and obstinate disposition make it very endearing to his folks. He is loyal to and protective of his tribe and warns whenever strangers approach.

Color & Coat

Coat: It has a thick undercoat, and its outer coat is long, coarse and straight, and stands off. It forms a mane around the shoulders.

Color: The majority of Pekingese are gold, red or sable. Cream, black, white, tan, black and tan and occasionally ‘blue’ or slate grey have appeared in the breed.

Living Environment

Pekingese are suitable for apartment life. They are relatively inactive indoors and will fare OK without a yard at its disposal. This breed might not make the best companion for kids. However, to reduce the risks, have the puppy grow up alongside kids so as to give it plenty of opportunities to spend good moments with them.

Health

Pekingese tend to catch colds very easily. They are also prone to herniated disks and dislocated kneecaps. Trichiasis (lashes growing inwards toward the eyeballs), breathing  and heart problems.
