Breed Profile

The Pointer , often called the English Pointer, is a medium to large-sized breed of dog (a Mastiff), created in England as a gun dog. English Pointers hail from mid 17th century England. The English Pointer was the product of crossing Bloodhounds, Bull Terriers, Italian Pointers, Foxhound, and Setter.

Temperament

Pointers are calm and easy to get along, despite their large size. Pointers have a high IQ, are friendly, clean and very faithful. They are known to be very peaceful and can  normally happily coexist with other dogs and cats.

Color & Coat

Coat: The coat of a Pointer is short, dense, smooth with a sheen.

Color: They are typically white with either liver, lemon, orange or black markings. Although pointers may come in any of these colors, most Pointers are primarily white with some body markings.

Living Environment

Pointers are not suitable for apartment life. They are moderately active indoors and do best with acreage. They love their folks including its smaller members. This breed brims with energy and requires its daily dose of strolls. Without proper exercise, it will feel cooped up and restless indoors.

Health

Pointers have good genes. Some problems that can occur in the breed include hip dysplasia, cherry eye, epilepsy, and allergies. The Acral mutilation syndrome is a hereditary sensory neuropathy with progressive mutilation of the distal extremities.
