Sealyham Terrier

Breed Profile

The Sealyham Terrier was created between 1850 and 1891 by Captain John Edwardes, in the Welsh county of Pembrokeshire. Originally the breed was used for multiple tasks, including pest control, small game hunting, vermin elimination, and in particular badgers. The Welsh Corgi, Fox Terrier (Wire), and the now extinct English White Terrier all played a role in the making up of the Sealyham Terrier.

Temperament

They can be determined, occasionally vocal, and noisy but can also be full of affection.  While they are known to be loyal family companions, they can also be trained to be working dogs, making them excellent mouse or rat hunters.

Color & Coat

Coat: They have a white double coat, It has a dense undercoat, while the outer coat is wiry and weather resistant.

Color: White, Brown & White, Lemon & White, Badger & White, Blue & White

Living Environment

The Sealyham Terriers fare well within an apartment, whilst they thrive within the company of others, they are also happy campers when left alone. Sealyham Terriers are suited for both the town and country. They can also be trained as puppies to get along with other animals, including cats and birds. This is a suitable dog breed for kids.

Health

This is a robust breed with few breed specific health problems. The main genetic problem is an eye condition called lens luxation. Lens luxation is a condition in which the lens slips out of position in the eyeball due to the weakening of the fibers that holds it in place.
