Welsh Corgi

Breed Profile

The Welsh Corgi , occasionally known as just a Corgi, is a small-sized type of herding dog that hails from Wales, United Kingdom. Two separate breeds can be distinguished: the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. The differences between the two breeds include bone structure, body length, and size. Cardigans are the larger of the two breeds, with large rounded ears and a 12-inch-long (30 cm) fox-like, flowing tail set in line with the body. Though the Cardigan exhibits more colors than the Pembroke, white should not be the dominant hue in its coat. The Cardigan is a double-coated dog where the outer coat exhibits a dense and somewhat rough texture.

Temperament

Corgis were once upon a time sturdy herding dogs who took their job description very seriously. They would nip the heels of the cattle to keep them in line, and their small bodies enabled them to avoid being kicked. Whilst Corgis like to set their own rules, they are still keen on pleasing their folks. They are versatile, can be clownish, attention seeking, and at times introspective.

Color & Coat

Living Environment

The Welsh Corgi can fare OK indoors provided they obtain their daily dose of fresh air and exercise. This dog gets along well with its folks and with children. Training will be a fun activity as this breed has no problems listening to commands. Return on investment will be high with this breed.

Health

The chief causes of death are similar in both breeds: canine cancer and old age. However, the Pembroke breed typically exhibits a higher percentage of deaths linked to either kidney failure or urethral obstruction.
